LUCIFER WAS are a Norwegian heavy prog rock band, strongly influenced by early seventies guitar, flute and vocal-oriented melodic progressive heavy rock and early heavy metal. The band's heavy guitar based sound is characterized by the creative use of the flute and unusual instruments like the Mellotron. Imagine a mix of BLACK SABBATH and early EAST OF EDEN, with a dash of JETHRO TULL. Band leader Thore Engen's lyrics have a mystical flair, and all the albums so far are part of a larger poetic cycle on the fall of the angel Lucifer.

The band was formed in 1969 and known as "EMPTY COFFIN / AUTUMN SERENADE". They later changed their name to "EZRA WEST" before changing their name again to LUCIFER WAS in 1972. LUCIFER WAS composed some material while they were active, but split up in 1974 before any of it could be recorded. They reunited in 1995 and recorded the material they had written in their initial period of activity - their first album - "Underground and Beyond" - consists entirely of this materials. "DiesGrows" is their six full-lenght album.
